What's happening right now?

Locked out

Safely, right now

  1. Wait somewhere safe and warm: a neighbour's, your car, a coffee shop.
  2. Don't break a window or pry the door. It adds damage without getting you in sooner.
  3. Keep ID that shows your address handy if it is with you.

Key broke in the lock

Safely, right now

  1. Don't push the broken piece back in or try the lock again.
  2. Keep the piece you still have. It helps cut a new key.

Lock won't turn

Safely, right now

  1. Don't force the key. A bent or broken key makes it harder.
  2. Skip the oil, the glue and the hot water. They make it worse.

Lost keys

Safely, right now

  1. Keys lost together with your address? Assume someone could use them.
  2. Don't hide a spare key anywhere outside in the meantime, not even under the mat.

Houses in Langstaff collect locks over the years: a front door from one decade, a side entry from another, a garage door that takes its own key. We rekey them all to a single key so the ring in your pocket finally gets lighter, and set up a spare that lives somewhere sensible.

The fix, explained · Langstaff

What is the door doing?

EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceThe key slides in and turns all the way round, but the bolt stays put.

The fix

If you rent, a lockout visit works much the same way, with a little extra care around who holds which keys. You show identification and something tying you to the unit, such as a lease or a piece of mail, and the locksmith opens your door.

EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceThe manager who holds the only set of office keys is on a plane.

The fix

Businesses are locked out by people as often as by hardware. A keyholder is away, a former employee still has a key, a master key has gone missing, or the only spare lives in a drawer behind the locked door.

EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionA roommate tried to help with tweezers, then by gluing the other half to it.

The fix

Broken key extraction is the removal of a snapped key piece from a lock so it can go back to work. It is done with slim hooks and spiral extractors that slide into the keyway beside the fragment, catch the cuts in the blade and draw it out the way it went in.

EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairSomeone smashed the little window beside the door, reached in and turned the thumb-turn.

The fix

Break-ins seldom come through the door with the strongest lock. Sliding patio doors are lifted off their track or pried at the latch, the garage man-door carries a light knob lock, a basement walkout is out of sight, and a storefront's narrow-stile deadbolt sits behind a bendable aluminum edge.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningThe lock works, but only if you lean on the door with your hip while turning the key.

The fix

A lock rarely seizes without warning. It asks for a wiggle, then a firmer wiggle, then it needs the door pulled toward you, and one morning it stops.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyYou were shovelling the driveway after dark and the ring must have slid out of your coat pocket somewhere under a metre of snow.

The fix

When a key disappears, cutting yourself another copy solves the wrong half of the problem. You can get in again, but so can whoever finds the original.

What the census means at the door

8%

Newer homes. About 8% of homes in Vaughan were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Where housing is new, garage entries, side doors and the front door were usually fitted at the same time but not always to the same key. Keying them alike is a small job that makes the household's ring simpler from the start.

63%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 63% of homes in Vaughan (2021 Census).

Detached houses have their own garages, sheds and gates, and each tends to carry a lock chosen on the day it was needed. A locksmith visiting such a home looks at all of them, not just the front door, and brings the whole property up to one standard.

Locksmith services · Langstaff

Homes and businesses in Langstaff tend to need the same handful of things from a locksmith, so that is how the list is arranged: emergency openings, changing or rekeying locks, stronger hardware for people who want it, commercial doors and access, and safes. Car keys sit at the end for the households that need them.

Tell us what your Langstaff door is doing

The company covers Langstaff around the clock, and the visit costs the same whenever it happens. The locksmith who arrives at midnight is the same one you would see at midday, with the same stocked van and the same habit of explaining first. A lockout is stressful enough without wondering whether the hour changed anything about the service.

Vaughan and Carrville

  • Clear about who can get in. After any rekey or replacement we tell you exactly which keys work and how many copies exist. Key control is the point, and you should have the full picture.

  • Careful with the building. We protect floors and finishes, work around your day where we can, and treat a shop or office with the same care as a home.

  • The choice explained in your terms. Rather than product names, we talk about what each option means for you: who has access, how it copes with weather, how easy it is to change later.

Which fix fits?

IfAn employee left on bad terms and still has a key.

ThenRekey the doors that key opens.

New pins make the old key just metal, and the remaining staff get fresh ones.

IfTwelve people have keys and nobody knows how many copies exist.

ThenA restricted key system.

Blanks that are only cut with your authorization stop the quiet copying, and a register tracks every key out.

IfYou want to know who came in through the back door and when.

ThenA keypad or fob reader with an audit log.

Each person gets their own code or fob, so the log shows entries by name.

IfThe only key to the car went into the lake with the kayak.

ThenCar Key Replacement.

It helps to think of a car key as several parts sharing one case.

What to expect, answered

Advice · (289) 216-7583

Will extracting the piece damage my lock?

Extractor tools grip the key, not the lock, and are meant to leave the pins, springs and plug as they were: hooks and spirals ride in the keyway grooves beside the fragment and draw it out the way the key travels. It is not certain, though; a deeply lodged fragment or a prior failure can still leave a lock, especially a vehicle cylinder, needing further work. Damage most often comes from what happens before the locksmith arrives, mainly tweezers, screwdrivers and glue, which is why leaving the keyway alone matters.

How do I look after a new lock so it stays smooth?

Very little is needed. Whatever lubricant and interval the cylinder maker specifies, worked into the keyway with a few turns of the key, keeps the pins free; using the wrong product collects grit instead of helping. Wipe salt off exterior hardware during winter melts. Snug the hinge and strike screws each spring and fall as the door moves with humidity. Cut spare keys from a crisp original rather than a worn copy.

What information helps before you come out?

Whether the door takes a skeleton-style bit key or a flat key in a round cylinder, roughly when the house was built, what the knob and bolt are doing, and whether the trouble is worse with the door closed. A photo of the faceplate in the door edge and one of the keyhole side is worth a great deal. Mention how many doors are involved and how many keys you would like afterwards.

Why does the locksmith care so much about the strike plate?

Because that is where a kicked door fails. The bolt is strong, but it sits in a pocket in the jamb held by a thin plate and short screws, and a boot splits the wood around it. A reinforced strike or box strike fastened with three-inch screws into the wall framing spreads the blow along the frame. It is the least visible part of the upgrade and often the one that does the most.
