In plain words

Businesses are locked out by people as often as by hardware. A keyholder is away, a former employee still has a key, a master key has gone missing, or the only spare lives in a drawer behind the locked door. A business lockout deals with the door in front of it and then with the pattern behind it. Cylinders can be rekeyed or removable cores swapped so an unreturned key becomes useless, new keys are cut and recorded against named holders, and a second keyholder or a lockbox is set up so that one absence never again closes the business for a morning.

Sound familiar?

The heavy glass door has been scraping the threshold for weeks. This morning the key turns, you can hear the bolt trying to move, but it is jammed hard in the strike and the door stays shut no matter how the handle is pulled.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

Weather, salt and wear on an exposed lock

A storefront cylinder lives a hard life: sidewalk salt, slush, rain and a thousand key turns a month. In winter the locksmith checks for frost on the cylinder face, tests how far the key seats, and judges whether cold grease or real ice is holding the plug. In any season the keyway is inspected for grit and a worn key is compared with a fresh one, since a copy of a copy stops lifting the pins cleanly long before it breaks. This tells the locksmith whether a patient thaw, a cleaning and dry lubricant, or a new cylinder is the right response, and what to leave behind so the same morning is not repeated.

  2. 2

Freeing a frozen or bound door

Ice and misalignment are dealt with by patience and leverage rather than force. A frozen storefront cylinder is treated with lock de-icer or gentle warmth until the plug turns, and the keyway is dried before a dry lubricant goes in. A door that has dropped on its pivots is lifted by hand or with a wedge to bring the bolt back in line with its strike while the cylinder is turned, and the bolt slides free. With the door open the cause is corrected so it does not repeat: pivots or the continuous hinge adjusted, the strike dressed or moved, the closer speed and latching force reset, and salt cleared from the threshold and bottom rail.

  3. 3

Access control back on its feet

When the lockout involved a reader, strike or magnetic lock, you leave with the system working as it was designed to. Power and backup batteries are restored, the strike or lock is confirmed to hold and release on command, and the reader accepts the fobs it should. Credentials belonging to people who have left are deactivated with the provider while everyone is thinking about it. The mechanical override key is the piece most businesses misplace; it should live with a named keyholder away from the door, not in a drawer inside. A short note of the controller's location and the provider's contact goes into the record for the next person who needs it.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    Door, pivot and closer adjustment

When the lockout was really a dropped door or a tired closer, lifting the door, adjusting pivots or a continuous hinge, moving the strike and resetting the closer are quoted as their own item beside the opening.

  2. 2

Storefront, lever, mortise or exit device

An aluminium storefront cylinder, a cylindrical lever lockset, a full mortise lock and the trim of an exit device each take different tools and time to open, and the hardware on your door sets the starting point.

  3. 3

    Rekeying or swapping cores afterwards

Making a lost or unreturned key useless is separate work, priced per cylinder or per core, and the count of doors sharing that key decides how much of it there is.

Same fees day, night or weekend.

Business Lockout Service: questions

Advice · (289) 216-7583

Do you work with our alarm company and access-control provider?

Yes, and it makes the visit smoother. The alarm station is told an entry is expected and the authorised person handles the disarm and password. For access control, the provider can often confirm the controller's status, unlock a magnetic lock remotely, or re-enrol fobs once you are inside, while the locksmith handles the mechanical side and the override cylinder. Nobody's wiring is cut; each party does the part it is set up to do.

Can you open a door that has a push bar on the inside?

Yes. From outside, an exit device is operated through its trim, which may be a keyed lever, a pull with a cylinder or a bare rim cylinder. Depending on the trim fitted, picking or decoding that cylinder either retracts the latch directly or unlocks a lever, knob or thumbpiece that then has to be turned to let the latch go. The bar, rods and dogging feature stay as installed for the emergency way out, and the bar is pressed afterward to confirm it releases the latch with one push.

Our alarm is armed. What happens when you open the door?

The opening is planned around it. Before any work, the person with the alarm code is ready to disarm, and where a monitoring company is involved they can be told to expect an entry at that address. If the contact trips anyway, the authorised person speaks to the station with the account password. Nothing about the alarm is bypassed; the door is opened, the system is disarmed normally, and the event is logged like any other.

What the census means at the door

8%

Newer homes. About 8% of homes in Vaughan were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

New homes frequently come with strikes held by short screws into soft framing. Replacing them with longer screws that reach the stud is inexpensive work that adds real strength, and it is one of the first things a locksmith checks in a newer area.

63%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 63% of homes in Vaughan (2021 Census).

A detached house gives a locksmith room to work: full access to both sides of every door, hinges and frames included. Repairs and upgrades can be thorough, from the front deadbolt to the gate latch, with nothing off limits.
