Broken Key Extraction

A roommate tried to help with tweezers, then by gluing the other half to it. The fragment is now further in than it started, there is dried glue around the keyway, and the front door still does not open.

In plain words

Broken key extraction is the removal of a snapped key piece from a lock so it can go back to work. It is done with slim hooks and spiral extractors that slide into the keyway beside the fragment, catch the cuts in the blade and draw it out the way it went in. First, the locksmith confirms you are entitled to the door or vehicle. Once the piece is out, the cylinder is inspected and cleaned, since a healthy lock does not rule out a key that was already worn, bent or fatigued, and a fresh key is cut so you are not relying on the copy that failed.

Sound familiar?

Overnight the deadbolt froze, and this morning the key would only turn partway. One more push and it sheared off flush with the face of the cylinder. There is nothing left to grip, and the cold is not helping.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

Reading the cylinder for the cause

Even a lock in good order can break a key that was already worn, bent or fatigued, so the cylinder is examined for a contributing cause all the same. The locksmith looks for grit and salt crust in the keyway, a cylinder cap that has loosened and let the plug shift, pins that have worn flat so the key needs force to lift them, springs that have weakened, and burrs at the mouth of the keyway that drag on the blade. On an exterior door the strike and hinges are checked as well, since a bolt that binds in its pocket makes the key carry the load. Each finding shapes the advice given once the fragment is out.

  2. 2

Thawing first on a frozen lock

A cylinder that broke a key because it was frozen needs the ice dealt with before the fragment will move. The locksmith works lock de-icer into the keyway, or holds gentle heat near the cylinder, until the ice inside liquefies and the plug loosens. Boiling water from the kettle stays indoors: it refreezes inside the keyway and can split a cold cylinder. With the plug free and at rest, the extraction proceeds as normal. Afterwards the cylinder is dried thoroughly and given a water-repelling dry lubricant rather than one that traps moisture, so the same morning is far less likely to repeat.

  3. 3

A lock that turns like it should

The visit closes with the lock proving itself. The new key goes in fully, turns through its full travel and comes out without a catch, from both sides, first with the door swung open, then with it shut against the strike. The bolt is watched seating fully in its pocket. You are shown the fragment that came out and told what condition the cylinder was in. Anything the locksmith noticed, a strike screw backing out or a hinge that has dropped, is pointed out so it is not a surprise later. The door is locked with your own new key as the last act of the visit.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    Rekeying other doors to match

If the cylinder ends up rekeyed or replaced, matching the other exterior locks to the new key is priced per cylinder, and simplest while the locksmith is already there.

  2. 2

    Number of keys cut

Copies are counted individually. One replacement for a single occupant and four for a household are different lines, and you choose the number on the spot.

  3. 3

    When you call

Whatever hour you call about a broken key extraction — morning, evening, a weekend or a holiday — the amount is the same. Locksmiths are reachable at any time, and the exact figure is confirmed on site once the technician has seen how deep the fragment sits.

Same fees day, night or weekend.

Broken Key Extraction: questions

Advice · (289) 216-7583

What proof do I need to show?

Photo identification and something that connects you to the lock. For a house or apartment that is a lease, a bill, addressed post, or confirmation from the property manager; for a business, your role there; for a vehicle, the registration or ownership papers with matching identification. If the documents are inside, say so on the phone and the check is completed once the door is open.

Will extracting the piece damage my lock?

Extractor tools grip the key, not the lock, and are meant to leave the pins, springs and plug as they were: hooks and spirals ride in the keyway grooves beside the fragment and draw it out the way the key travels. It is not certain, though; a deeply lodged fragment or a prior failure can still leave a lock, especially a vehicle cylinder, needing further work. Damage most often comes from what happens before the locksmith arrives, mainly tweezers, screwdrivers and glue, which is why leaving the keyway alone matters.

What lubricant should I use on the lock afterwards?

Whatever the lock's own maker specifies, since cylinders differ: many call for a dry graphite or PTFE spray blown into the keyway and worked in with the key, once or twice a year, while others prohibit graphite and specify their own product instead. General-purpose oils, grease and sprays feel smooth at first but on most cylinders collect dust and clog the pins, which leads back to the sticking that breaks keys. A little goes a long way; too much of any lubricant can also hold moisture.

What the census means at the door

8%

Newer homes. About 8% of homes in Vaughan were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

New homes frequently come with strikes held by short screws into soft framing. Replacing them with longer screws that reach the stud is inexpensive work that adds real strength, and it is one of the first things a locksmith checks in a newer area.

63%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 63% of homes in Vaughan (2021 Census).

A detached house gives a locksmith room to work: full access to both sides of every door, hinges and frames included. Repairs and upgrades can be thorough, from the front deadbolt to the gate latch, with nothing off limits.
